Athens

Athens

Although I was born in Athens, Georgia, I now live in New York City…a Southern boy living in the land of the Yankees. It’s an interesting and sometimes fractious personal dichotomy. Every day on my work commute, I pass this sign, which momentarily jars me back to quick memories of my childhood home. The fact that it’s a liquor store somehow makes it even more odd, since no one in my family ever drank, and alcohol didn’t really affect my life until adulthood. We are a product of our pasts, no matter what our present would like us to believe. New York City, 2010.

Inside the lobby of Hill Country, part of the renaissance of barbecue joints in Manhattan. The smell of sauce and meat was heavenly, almost enough to counter the hokey rodeo decor. New York City, 2010.

I’m participating again in the Spark collaboration project (getsparked.org), and this shot was an alternate take for my work on Kumani Gantt’s magnificent poem “Stone Tablets.” I’ll post the shot that was finally chosen over this one next week. New York City, 2010.
